Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a full-time architectural historian for employment in the Raleigh, NC office. The candidate should have strong skills in surveying and analyzing historic resources, be able to conduct field surveys and architectural historic research, and have the facility to draft clearly written reports. The preferred candidate will work with a senior architectural historian on assigned and self-directed activities.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Interacting with Project Managers, clients, state HPOs, federal review agencies, and associates in a professional consulting environment

  • Conducting research and developing studies and analysis on regional and local basis

  • Preparing reports and presentations

  • Advising Project Managers and planners regarding historic preservation issues, particularly as they relate to Section 106 and Section 4(f)

  • Performing field work to gather data

  • Supporting senior staff in preparation for meetings and presentations

  • Participating in public meetings or hearings to explain technical information and to gather feedback from those affected by transportation projects

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related discipline, with strong focus on recording, researching, analyzing, and understanding historic architectural resources

  • 5+ years’ experience in architectural history and historic preservation

  • Understanding of historic American architecture, academic and, in particular, vernacular; demonstrated knowledge of North Carolina architecture preferred

  • Ability to parse the design and history of everyday architectural resources and associated landscapes and evaluate their National Register of Historic Places eligibility

  • Ability and desire to conduct field surveys, sometimes in out-of-the-way locations requiring travel and overnight stays

  • Capacity to clearly record historic resources with text, photographs, and sketches, as needed, and draft lucid reports; knowledge of Section 106 of the NHPA, Section 4(f) of the DOT Act, and NEPA, as they apply to historic resources

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • A valid driver's license is required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related discipline

  • Ability and willingness to interact with Project Managers, clients, state HPOs, federal review agencies, etc.

  • Thorough knowledge of Section 106 of the NHPA, Section 4(f) of the DOT Act, and NEPA

  • Regionally specific (North Carolina and surrounding states) architectural history knowledge
