The Customs and Border Protection P-3 Aircraft Maintenance program supports law enforcement and security efforts against terrorism, human smuggling, drug smuggling and transport of counterfeit or unsafe goods. The P-3 fleet consists of eight Airborne Early Warning (AEW) and six Long Range Tracker (LRT) high-endurance, all-weather, tactical turbo-prop aircraft. The AEW aircraft are utilized primarily for long-range patrols along the entire U.S. border, and in source and transit zone countries. The LRT aircraft are used to intercept, track airborne and surface threats in source and transit zone countries. The P-3 aircraft are equipped with state-of-the-art, highly sophisticated sensor equipment, i.e., radar, electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) detecting systems.
The Structural Engineer will provide engineering services for the P-3 aircraft in support of issues identified during site or depot maintenance or as requested by the COR/DAR. The Structural Engineer shall respond within 24 hours with an initial response and plan. The structural engineer will be part of an engineering team that includes electrical and mechanical engineers. The Structural Engineer will ensure that P-3 mission objectives are met by providing day-to-day engineering services for events that consist of, but are not limited to aircraft cracks, corrosion, modifications, integration (e.g., radars, sensors), upgrades (e.g., flight management system, mission management system), and configuration changes. Duties include:
Review design and development requirements and develop concepts, research, analyze, and create structural engineering specifications using various metallic, non-metallic, and composite materials
Incorporate load calculations into models and evaluate the integrity of structural materials
Use computer-aided design, mathematical models, and other computer software to formulate, analyze, and modify the aircraft
Use models to test damage tolerance, durability, and stability to determine structural configurations
Document performance records and inspect damaged or malfunctioning products
Deliverables will include specifications, system drawings, technical schedules, technical plans, design documents, reports, product manuals, operations and maintenance manuals, result validation, and interface control documentation.
Bachelors degree in aerospace engineering
Current professional license
Ability to travel
Must be a U.S. citizen able to obtain a CBP clearance
Experience as a P-3 structural engineer
Support of a fleet of at least 10 large aircraft
IS9001 and AS9100D quality programs
Familiarity with COMNAVAIRFORINST 4790.2 series, the Naval Aviation Maintenance Program (NAMP)
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge of FAA and defense regulations
Experience working with DAR and DERs
