The Designer is responsible for initiating and developing engineering drawings through completion for assigned projects in conformance with the requirements, applicable codes, and design criteria established by the project's discipline engineers. Works under the direction of the Design Supervisor or Lead Designer.
Under general supervision, develops engineering drawings of moderate complexity.
Applies a solid level of understanding within a specific discipline.
Familiar with codes, permits, and software applications related to the discipline.
Understands the process of preparing designs and drawings using project specifications and discipline-associated written and verbal instructions in accordance with established design practices, standards, and procedures.
Basic understanding of Engineer's process of performing and verifying design calculations to support the overall project design.
Fully understands the purpose and use of vendor documents and reviews discipline supplier documents for accuracy.
Basic knowledge of the use of requisitions and the role of materials management.
Assists in the collection of data on manpower, man-hour, and labor costs requirements for design staff to aid in evaluating the budget.
Basic knowledge of cost estimating methods and performs material take-offs for the discipline.
Intermediate knowledge of discipline's materials costs and concept of cost analysis and forecasting.
Works to project specifications and discipline-associated written and verbal instructions in accordance with established design practices, standards and procedures.
Coordinates work with that of others in discipline group and other discipline groups on the project.
Prepares complete information for design details, bill of materials, etc., that can be distributed to other design or draft personnel for completion.
Understands project scope as presented within a specific discipline.
Provides support for customer's engineering deliverables.
Advises the Design Supervisor, Lead Designer or Supervising Discipline Engineer about status of assignment(s) with respect to schedule, budgets, delays and adverse problems.
Provides technical guidance and assistance to other design and draft personnel and is responsible for neatness and accuracy of work.
Ensures quality, quantity and completeness of the assigned design tasks.
Keeps proper files and records related to assigned design activities.
Continually upgrades technical knowledge and capabilities and pursues additional coursework and training.
Develops an understanding of the role of each of the other disciplines in Engineering.

Bachelors degree in Engineering,
5 years of job-related experience or equivalent
Experience in major aspects of industrial fire protection and life safety, and major codes and standards, including:
o NFPA suppression system standards (water, foam, foam-water, gaseous)
o NFPA alarm system standards (including air aspiration)
o DOE and DOD
o FM Global Data Sheets
Special hazards, including:
o Electric generating plants (hydroelectric, fossil fuels)
o Facilities handling nuclear materials
o Battery energy storage systems
o Flammable and combustible liquids
o LNG and LPG
o Explosions and deflagrations
-Existing facility evaluations
-Fire hazard and risk evaluations / analyses
-Life safety (NFPA, IBC/IFC, OSHA)
-Performance based design
-Hydraulic analysis software (e.g., HASS, HydraCAL)
-Must be able to communicate complex ideas clearly and in a manner readily understood by stakeholders outside the fire protection profession
-Must be able to write clearly and succinctly
-Must be able to engage stakeholders (client, authority, management) in discussions related to fire and life safety issues and clearly communicate ...
-Develop engineering deliverables, scope of work, budget (engineering hours) and schedule
-Must be familiar with Earned Value Measurement System (EVMS)
Position may require travel.
Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance
Registered Engineer in fire protection, or related discipline (e.g., mechanical, or electrical) and willing to become registered in fire protection by exam
Familiarity with various CAD programs such as AutoCAD, Revit, HydraCAD (and HydraCalc)
