This vacancy creates an opportunity for suitably qualified and motivated individual to join the largest number of ground engineering professionals covering Scotland and Ireland with involvement in UK and Europe wide projects delivering sustainable, resilient and sophisticated transport, water and energy infrastructure schemes and buildings projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • A leading role in contributions to infrastructure, buildings and power projects in the UK and overseas such as ports, airports, roads and railways, buildings & structures, coastal defences, power generation, water and waste water schemes.

  • This role will include all elements of project planning and budget control and technical and management responsibilities.

  • Tasks will include leading and managing ground investigations, interpretation of investigation data, derivation of design parameters; ULS and SLS geotechnical designs for deep and shallow foundations, earthworks, cantilever and embedded retaining structures, buried structures, including soil/structure interaction, using commercial software such as WALLAP, Frew, the GeoSlope Suite and Plaxis.

  • Lead preparation of Geotechnical Design Reports (as well as Ground Investigations Reports and technical notes) in accordance with nationally and internationally recognised standards.

  • Lead meetings with contractors and clients, both external and internal and provide geotechnical input to multi-disciplinary project design teams.

  • Leading role in feasibility and scheme assessment, engineering design, site assessments, construction stage support, writing reports and supervision of junior engineers.

  • Delivery of projects or parts of multidisciplinary projects including conducting the internal checking and review of work by other members of the ground engineering division.

  • Prepare high quality technical and financial components of prequalification and tender documentation bidding for new and extended commissions.

  • Preparing project delivery programs, budget controls, mentoring and developing junior staff.

Minimum Requirements

To be successful in this role we are looking for candidates with the following;

  • Experience of working in geotechnical design at Principal or Senior levels (i.e. working to EuroCode 7 and other recognised standards).

  • In depth working knowledge of ground investigation methods, soil and rock parameter selection, design of shallow footings, piles and retaining walls.

  • Wide range of design experience at Principal or Senior level including foundations, retaining walls, soil nails, reinforced soil, earthworks and ground improvement.

  • Good understanding and extensive experience of using geotechnical software in earthworks, deep and shallow foundations, retaining structures and systems (such as SlopeW, WALLAP, Oasys Suite). Experience in using FE 2D and 3D analyses (such as Plaxis, Midas) would be an advantage.

  • Management experience of technical staff and projects and good oral, written, graphical communication skills are required. Experience of writing complex technical reports, wide ranging specifications and contract documents would be an advantage.

  • Willingness to travel within the UK and overseas for limited periods is essential. Previous site and/or overseas experience will be an advantage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A civil engineering first degree (BSc, BEng or MEng or equivalent) is essential.

  • A masters or PhD in a geotechnical subject would be an advantage.

  • MICE (or equivalent) CEng is required with minimum ground engineering experience.
