AECOM Senior Waste Management Engineer in Edmonton, Alberta

Job Summary

AECOM has an opportunity for a Senior Waste Management Engineer to support AECOM’s waste management team in multiple offices across Canada. The position can be based out of any our AECOM offices, including Burnaby, Edmonton, Calgary, Markham, Guelph offices. This position includes solid waste system infrastructure planning and design related activities and resident engineer /inspector duties. Ideal candidates will have background in civil construction, in particular heavy earthworks and soil processing, landfill construction (and closure) and construction supervision.

The design responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to :

  • Working in solid waste management including projects such as the development of Landfill and Compost Operations Plans, Master Plans, Environmental Monitoring Plans, Landfill Fill Plans, Landfill Closure and Post-Closure Care Plans, Solid Waste Planning, Airspace Analysis, Financial Modelling, and the design of /and construction management of landfills cells & caps

  • Working on specialized environmental projects and environmental site assessments environmental compliance, monitoring programs and site remediation

  • Depending on the seniority, office duties would include summarizing data collected in the field, evaluation of field and laboratory data, tabulation and evaluation of data, analyzing project-specific data and remedial design, AutoCAD Civil 3D for civil earthworks, preparation of contract specifications, and writing associated reports

  • Assistance with the preparation of health and safety and quality management plans

  • Working with a multidisciplinary team on a wide variety of projects which may include major infrastructure, mining and oil and gas, and solid waste management systems

  • The field responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • groundwater monitoring and sampling, environmental drilling and logging, test pitting, soil and gas sampling

  • remedial construction oversight, landfill construction oversight, construction survey (GPS), nuclear densometer testing, and construction documentation

The construction management responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct project management

  • Support proposal writing and scoping of work

  • Mentoring of less senior team members

  • Observe and monitor construction work on-site at senior level

  • Review quality control and quality assurance records and checklists for completeness

  • Anticipate project needs and provide/ obtain technical support as required

  • Review quality control and quality assurance records and checklists for completeness

  • Assess requests for changes of material or methods, coordinate with Design Engineer

  • Take action as necessary to allow construction to proceed on schedule and on budget

  • Support shop drawing and submittal review

  • Prepare/ compile construction photo record

  • Prepare monthly progress payment certificates complete with payment recommendations

  • Prepare a list of outstanding deficiencies and recommend acceptance of the work

  • Prepare or review Construction QA/QC Report

  • Prepare or review Construction Completion Certificate

  • Prepare Final Acceptance Certificates

  • Review inspection report

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering degree (or diploma and suitable experience) from a recognized post-secondary institution

  • 10+ years of civil and /or environmental engineering experience, including particular work experience in site inspection and construction management

  • Good understanding of engineering construction practice

  • Familiarity with heavy civil (earthworks) construction projects

  • Landfill construction experience is viewed as being advantageous

  • Familiarity with material and construction quality control standards (in particular as they relate to soil testing)

  • Experience in contract law, project management and cost control is advantageous

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Valid driver’s license required

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10-15 years experience in waste management strongly preferred

  • AutoCAD Civil 3D knowledge an asset

  • Fluency in written and spoken French is an asset

  • Survey experience an asset
