Job Summary

The Business Unit Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Director, will be located in the DC Metropolitan area, Chantilly, VA or work remotely. This role will provide broad range management and technical oversight for HSE programs with emphasis on occupational safety and health program management. The Business Unit HSE Director has primary responsibility to develop, monitor, assess, and review HSE programs and performance across operations to support compliance with HSE regulations, company requirements, industry best practices and continuous improvement. Specifically, the Business Unit HSE Director will:

  • Provide the leadership, standards of performance, and guidance to administer all phases of the Group injury prevention, occupational health, and environmental protection programs throughout the assigned Business Unit operations.

  • Continuously monitor and evaluate Business Unit HSE performance; design and assess injury and illness reduction programs.

  • Assure appropriate hazard control and prevention program are compliant, resourced and implemented to include sufficient controls, PPE, training and awareness.

  • Provide technical advice to management for examination of problems related to safety, injury prevention, equipment and property protection, pollution prevention, industrial hygiene, and substance abuse prevention as relates to safety performance.

  • Establish and track key safety metrics and report monthly to senior management with the identification of trends and opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • Support and work within the parameters of the Group Worker's Compensation program and provide leadership with a focus on reducing claims, providing for effective medical treatment of injured workers, and aggressively managing cases to reduce workers' compensation costs.

  • Perform incident investigations, conduct root cause analysis, recommend corrective and preventative actions, and prepare corresponding reports.

  • Develop HSE training programs to implement HSE programs and procedures.

Minimum Requirements

The Business Unit HSE Director must have:

  • Availability to work in AECOM's Germantown, MD office, Chantilly, VA office, or remotely in the DC Metropolitan area

  • Active Top Secret Clearance - TS

  • Ability to obtain Top Secret / SCI Clearance - TS/SCI

  • 8+ years of professional level HSE experience with proven management, communications, and technical skills.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, safety management, health or related field preferred. Master's degree or progress towards Master's degree is preferred.

  • Professional Certification(s): Certified Safety Professional (CSP); Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); Certified Health Physicist (CHP), and/or Professional Engineer (PE) - preference is CSP.

  • Demonstrated experience in working with all levels of management to be proactive in HSE management and resolve safety and environmental issues; in addition, shall also have the capability to communicate effectively (oral and written) with executive management; middle management; line management and hourly workers.

  • Demonstrated ability to interface with Group clients, client HSE Professionals and client program/contract managers in defining and assessing the effectiveness of HSE programs.

  • Excellent writing skills.

  • Experience in managing HSE professionals and programs in multiple operational settings and across business units.

  • The ability to travel extensively (about 50%), including travel to international, remote and/or hostile locations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Certification(s): Certified Safety Professional (CSP); Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); Certified Health Physicist (CHP), and/or Professional Engineer (PE) - preference is CSP.

  • Top Secret / SCI Clearance - TS/SCI
