Job Summary

AECOM is actively seeking a highly talented, experienced and motivated Commissioning Engineer for immediate employment in our Arlington, VA office.

The Commissioning Engineer will support new construction building commissioning and existing building retro-commissioning projects. The qualified candidate will have proven past performance in engineering design and construction in the healthcare, mission critical, DoD, higher education, and the K-12 market. The candidate will interface daily with both AECOM design and construction professionals well as clients, construction personnel, and facility managers. Position requires 50% onsite presence during the installation, startup, and functional testing of mechanical systems.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Possess project specific knowledge of the program’s commissioning requirements as defined in the project specifications and commissioning plan

  • Manages and leads the overall project including technical, financial, and client satisfaction

  • Accountable for the development, coordination, and execution of the design phase, construction phase, testing/training phase, warranty phase activities, final commissioning report and personnel under his/her direction

  • Establishes the scope, work plan and work schedule and ensures this is communicated to the Project staff and Department Managers

  • Ensures that programs are conducted within budget and on schedule

  • Performs Commissioning Reviews of construction documents

  • Attends and actively participates project coordination meetings

  • Leads field commissioning coordination meetings

  • Records and distributes commissioning coordination meeting minutes

  • Reviews Shop Drawings and Equipment Submittals

  • Develops Pre-functional Construction Checklists

  • Develops Functional Test Procedures

  • Performs Construction/Installation Observations

  • Evaluates equipment and building control/SCADA system installations with respect to contract documents and industry standards

  • Evaluates equipment and building control system installations with respect to the construction schedule

  • Provides detailed daily construction observation reports or as required when working on a project location

  • Assists in the Training of Facility Operators on Building Systems

  • Witnesses and reports on piping hydrostatic testing, duct air leakage testing

  • Witnesses Startup Procedures

  • Performs Functional Test Procedures

  • Assists in Troubleshooting

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering

  • 5+ years of experience in Building Commissioning focused on healthcare, cleanrooms and laboratory facilities

  • Certification from ACG, BCA, or ASHRAE

  • Hands on experience performing design reviews, developing commissioning plans, specifications and procedures

  • Construction phase experience including establishing project commissioning teams, inspecting mechanical installation, startup, testing, and training of HVAC Systems, Building Automation Systems, Electrical Distribution Equipment, Emergency Power Systems, and Life Safety Systems

  • Expertise in existing facility retro-commissioning and facility condition assessments and energy audits

  • Position requires 50% construction site presence

  • 25% overnight Travel may be required

  • Due to the nature of this work, U.S. citizenship is required

  • TS SCI Eligible

  • Must have a thorough understanding of the responsibilities to both the Company and the client as set forth by the contractual agreement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills

  • Strong technical skills in facility system design, construction and operations

  • Ability to conduct technical presentations and discuss commissioning subject matter with authority

  • Knowledgeable in healthcare facility design and operational standards

  • PE License

  • Certified Healthcare Facility Design Professional
